A stable yard with companions resting in stalls

Job: Stablehands

Care for stored pets and mounts at village stables — daily pay, training, grooming, and monthly commission.

What Are Stablehands?

Village stable care for stored pets and mounts

Stablehands are characters with the permanent Stablehand job who care for stored pets and mounts at village stables. Owners board companions on the My Companions dashboard; stablehands keep them happy with /stable care, /stable train, and /stable groom on Discord.

Storage fees, retrieve fees, and marketplace actions live on the dashboard. Stablehand gameplay is Discord-first — one daily care roll covers the whole village yard, and any stablehand in that village can work any boarded companion there.

  • Home village: Your stablehand's home village (Rudania, Inariko, or Vhintl) sets which yard you work — not where you are traveling

  • One care roll per village per day: Whoever runs /stable care first cares for everyone that day
  • Daily pay: 5 tokens upkeep on an empty yard · 5 + 5 per companion when the yard has boarders (before roll multiplier)
  • Monthly commission: 40% of owner board fees when you care on 20+ days that month — shared among qualifying stablehands in the village
  • Owner supplies: Training and grooming consume items owners gift to stablehands via /economy gift

  • Store / retrieve: 100 tokens each on the Dashboard
  • Monthly board: Autopay on the 1st100 tokens/slot, scaled by happiness
  • Board debt: Unpaid remainder accrues if autopay can't cover the bill — token balance never goes negative

What Stablehands Do

Village stable yards, daily pay, and owner board fees

Stablehands maintain the village stable yard where owners board pets and mounts. Skipping care hurts companion happiness, which lowers owner board fees and stablehand commission.

  • Daily paymeta player tokens for upkeep and yard work (see Pay & RP for in-character flavor)
  • Monthly commissionmeta tokens from owner board fees when you care consistently (20+ days/month)
  • Any stablehand in a village can care for, train, or groom any stored or for-sale companion in that village's yard
  • Owners upgrade active pets with tokens; fund training and grooming by gifting items to a stablehand in their village
  • Villages without stablehands see faster happiness decay when care is missed (−5/day vs −3/day)

Owner Storage (Dashboard)

My Companions · store, retrieve, sell — see Stables for the full owner guide

Each character has their own stall storage under My Companions. Pets and mounts share those slots — you cannot fill every slot with only mounts or only pets.

Capacity depends on the character's home village level: level 13 stalls · level 24 · level 35. That is separate from the village yard stablehands work in — owners store companions into the shared village yard, but slot limits are per character.

Owner Actions

  • Store (board)100 Tokens
  • Retrieve (make active)100 Tokens
  • List for saleFree (auto-priced)
  • Re-register mount name20 Tokens
  • Storeboards a companion into the owner's home village yard where any stablehand there can care for it
  • Retrievetakes a companion back as your active pet or mount
  • List for salelisted companions move to the listed village yard
  • One active mount and one active pet per character — you cannot have an active companion and the same one stored
  • Cannot store a companion already listed for sale
  • If home village loses a level, overflow stalls become locked (no retrieve or sell) until level recovers — oldest stored companions keep the accessible stalls first
  • See boarded companions and village stablehands on Village Stables

Happiness & Missed Care

0–100 scale · affects training, fees, and commission

Happiness ranges 0–100 (default 70 when stored). See Pets for treat items, roll bonuses, and active-companion decay.

  • 80+Happy · 60–79 — Content · 40–59 — Restless · Below 40 — Unhappy
  • Companions below 40 skip /stable train that day
  • If no stablehand in the village cared yesterday: −3/day when stablehands exist · −5/day when none
  • Owners can boost stored pet happiness with /pet treat

Monthly Board & Commission

Owner fees on the 1st · stablehand commission

On the 1st of each month (Eastern), owner board fees autopay from each owner's token balance for every stored slot from the previous month. Base fee: 100 tokens per slot, adjusted by average happiness.

If an owner can't cover the full bill, the system deducts what it can and records the remainder as board debt — balances never go negative. They must clear debt on My Companions before retrieving or listing stored companions for sale. See Stables → Fees for the full owner billing guide.

Monthly Board (per stored slot)

  • 80+ avg happiness (Excellent)100 Tokens (100%)
  • 60–79 (Good)100 Tokens (100%)
  • 40–59 (Neglected)50 Tokens (50%)
  • Below 40 (Poor)0 Tokens — grace month
  • Stablehand commission40% of base slot fee (~40 tokens at full rate) — needs 20+ care days that month, split among qualifying stablehands
  • Board debtOwners who couldn't pay in full at autopay owe the remainder — companions stay stored but retrieve/list are blocked until they Pay on My Companions
  • On the 15th, owners averaging below 50 happiness may get a mid-month warning

Meta Pay & In-World Compensation

Player tokens vs. goods and services in RP

Stablehand daily wages and monthly commission are meta — they credit player tokens to your Discord account automatically when you run commands and when owners pay board fees. Think of them as the village ledger keeping the job viable in gameplay, not a sack of coins your OC is physically carrying home from the stable.

In the world of Roots, stablehands are compensated through goods and services arranged between players. The bot does not enforce how you flavor that — you and your scene partners decide what “paid” looks like in RP.

  • Meta (automatic)Town-hall wages from /stable care and /stable train, plus month-end commission from owner board fees — all land as player tokens
  • In-world (player-arranged)Meals, lodging, mended tack, forge work, produce, favors, art/writing commissions, or a cut of a boarding agreement — whatever fits your village and character
  • Supplies on the jobOwner-gifted training items and groom offerings via /economy gift *are* tangible in-world goods your stablehand spends when they train or groom — stock your inventory through RP trades, gifts, or gathering
  • Owner board fees are also meta tokens (owners pay on the Dashboard / monthly bill) — RP that as stable dues, livery invoices, or village tax however you like
  • You are welcome to describe commission as a town-hall stipend, a shared tip jar among village stablehands, or a handshake deal with a rancher who boards through your yard — the token numbers track the mechanic; your prose carries the flavor

Job Vouchers

Stablehand cannot be vouchered

The Stablehand job is permanent and cannot be accessed through Job Vouchers. See Jobs & Vouchers for general voucher rules on other jobs.

Common Problems & Fixes

When care fails or companions decline

Training skipped — no training supplies

Owners must /economy gift the right items to your stablehand (carrots/grains for hoofed mounts, raw meat for carnivore pets, etc.). You need 1 item per boarder per successful training day.

Groom failed — not enough items

Owners gift the full groom offering (e.g. 10× Armoranth for a horse coat change) to your stablehand before you run /stable groom.

Already completed stable care today

Care resets at midnight Eastern. One /stable care per stablehand per day — but only one care roll needed per village. /stable train is once per boarder per day.

Empty stable — is care worth it?

Yes. 5 tokens daily upkeep even with an empty yard, plus +5 per companion in the village yard (before roll multiplier). Consistent care builds your monthly commission.

Must have the Stablehand job

Your OC needs the permanent Stablehand job and a home village (Rudania, Inariko, or Vhintl).

Companion happiness dropping fast

Run /stable care every day — or make sure some stablehand in the village does. When care is missed: −3/day if the village has stablehands, −5/day if none.

Owner can't retrieve their companion

Monthly board autopays on the 1st. If they didn't have enough tokens, the unpaid portion is board debt. They use Pay on My Companions before retrieve or listing stored companions — see Stables.

Low or no commission at month end

You need 20+ care days that month. Happiness tier also scales your cut — consistent great care pays best.

Your stable is full (owner)

Capacity is 3 / 4 / 5 stalls at home village levels 1 / 2 / 3. Retrieve or sell from an accessible stall, or raise your village level.

Locked stall — can't retrieve or sell

Village level dropped while companions were stored. Locked companions stay until your home village reaches the required level again.
